Tasleen "Jamilia" Firdausee

One of the hottest artist of this time, Jamila, a.k.a. Tasleem Firdausee, of Chicago, IL, is taking this new wave of artistic fusion to the next level. She is a multidimensional spoken word artist, singer, writer, actor, radio host, activist and fashion designer and who is also very active in women and children’s rights. Her shy demeanor fools audiences with her big bright smile, as a powerful voice emanates from her soul she captivates the hearts of her audience. She draws from her experiences growing up on the south side of Chicago, her faith and travels. She is an alumnus of Columbia College in Chicago where she studied Theater and Fashion Design. Jamila is one of the most creative and innovative revolutionary artist of her time, fusing Hip-Hop, Soul, jazz and a little blues influence gives her that universal appeal. Her audience is frozen when she is on stage as they internalize and hold on to her every word.

Jamila has been featured and or shared the stage with legendary artists, such as “The Last Poets,” Lupe Fiasco, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jurassic Five, Jessica Care Moore, Malik Yusef, Kindred and the Family Soul, Rock Steady Crew, Illysha Shabazz (Malcolm X’s daughter) and many more. Also she was in the legendary poetry movie “Love Jones” and a featured poet on the upcoming Documentary about the late great Oscar Brown Jr, just to name a few.

She gives of her talent and time in the community teaching Hip-Hop and Spoken Word workshops to children and volunteering as a mentor for disadvantaged youth. She has been featured on several radio and television stations in Chicago, London, New York, New Jersey and Portland. Her poetry performance DVD “My Soul Speaks” was released in 2006. Jamila is also the host of a weekly radio show on WCEV 1450 AM/www.radioislam.com, which is a platform that showcases artistic expression through poetry, hip-hop, history, and edutainment. She has interviewed greats like Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, Professor Griff, Immortal Technique, DJ Tony Tone, Sam Greenlee, Sister Ava Muhammad and even Michelle Obama (Barack Obama’s wife) just to name a few. Tasleem released her debut CD self titled “Tasleem” March 2008, which features The Last Poets, Amir Sulaiman, Khari Lemuel and Jazz pianist Reginald Robinson. Also launched March 2008 “House of Firdausee” clothing line. It is definitely receiving rave reviews all over the spoken word/hip-hop and fashion industries. The movement has just begun……
